Nathan started on a level 2 course in childcare and through hard work and commitment he developed the skills he needed to gain an apprenticeship in childcare at St Peter and St Paul’s school and he is now currently working full time.
His tutor said “Nathan always worked hard and had childrens’ education at the heart of everything he did. Nathan is an excellent role model for males who are interested in working in childcare or education and I am very proud of him”.
Amy Edwards studied a childcare level 1 programme at Henley College and she was intending to progress to the level 2 until her friend secured a childcare Apprenticeship and got her interested as well.
Amy said “I went for an Apprenticeship interview and didn’t get the job but I learnt from that experience. Just as I was about to give up I went for a job try at the Hope Centre and got the job!
I choose an Apprenticeship because I wanted more money as without money you are a completely different person. I still have a week end job but an Apprenticeship is great because I am getting qualified and I am being paid to come to College! My tutor Emma has been brilliant and helped me with my work and I would say to anyone thinking of an Apprenticeship to just Go for IT.!
Stephanie Read is 22 and had various different jobs when she left school. Before deciding to choose the Apprenticeship route Stephanie looked at all her options including a full time childcare programme. She decided that at her age an Apprenticeship was her best route as she would have to pay for a full time childcare course but with the Apprenticeship she would be paid instead!
Stephanie said “the training and experience I am receiving on my apprenticeship at Valley House Nursery is giving me confidence to go to University and train to be a teacher.“
Emily Birch has always wanted to work with children so she started her story with Henley College by doing a level 2 childcare programme. Once she had finished she says:
“I needed money and thought I would go for a childcare Apprenticeship and I absolutely love it because I am getting educated and earning a wage.
I had amazing help from Raj at the College, she set me up with loads of interviews, helped me with what to wear and with the research on the companies.
Holly Goodwin was studying her AS levels at Calundon Castle but she really wanted to work with young children. The head of sixth form introduced Holly to apprenticeships and she said “I thought it would be hard to gain an apprenticeship but in fact it was really easy. The first interview I went to I got the job!
I completed my childcare apprenticeship at Moat House Primary school in the nursery and because there were already several other apprentices working there it motivated me to complete my qualification.
I recommend an apprenticeship because it is paid work, you learn new skills and once you are qualified you can go on to be a nursery nurse anywhere in the world.
